How Much and How Often to Feed a Puppy
How many meals a puppy needs at each age, how to work out the right portion, when to switch to adult food, and the body-condition check that matters most.

The right amount of food depends on your puppy's food, age and expected adult size, so start with the feeding guide on the packet and then adjust by body condition. How often to feed is simpler: young puppies need several small meals a day, dropping to two as they grow.
How many meals a day
| Age | Meals per day |
|---|---|
| 6โ12 weeks | 4 |
| 3โ6 months | 3 |
| 6โ12 months | 2 |
| Adult | Usually 2 |
Split the daily amount between the meals โ don't give a full portion at each one. Feed at roughly the same times every day; it makes toilet training far more predictable.
Working out the portion
- Find the feeding guide on your puppy food. It's usually a table by current weight and age, or by expected adult weight.
- Use it as a starting point, not a rule. Guides are averages, and your puppy may need more or less.
- Weigh the food with a kitchen scale. A cup or scoop can be surprisingly inaccurate.
- Count treats. Treats and chews should be no more than about 10% of daily calories โ reduce meals a little on heavy training days.
- Re-check every couple of weeks. Puppies grow fast, so the right amount keeps changing.
The body-condition check
This matters more than any chart. Every week or two:
- Ribs: you should be able to feel them easily with light pressure, under a thin layer of fat โ but not see them sticking out.
- Waist: looking down from above, there should be a visible waist behind the ribs.
- Tummy: from the side, the belly should tuck up behind the ribcage.
If your puppy is getting round with no waist, cut back a little. If you can see the ribs and hip bones, increase a little. Ask your vet to show you how to body-score your puppy at their next check-up โ it's a skill worth learning.
When to switch to adult food
- Small breeds: often around 7โ9 months.
- Medium breeds: around 12 months.
- Large and giant breeds: 12โ14 months or later.
If you're unsure, staying on puppy food a little longer is safer than switching too early. When you change foods, mix the new one in gradually over 7โ10 days to avoid an upset stomach.
Good habits
- Fresh water available at all times.
- Pick the bowl up after about 15 minutes, even if it isn't finished.
- No table scraps โ they unbalance a complete diet, and some human foods are dangerous. See our list of foods that are toxic to dogs.
Frequently asked questions
Should I leave food out for my puppy all day?
It's better to feed set meals. Scheduled meals make toilet training more predictable, help you notice quickly if your puppy goes off their food, and make it easier to control how much they eat. Pick the bowl up after about 15 minutes.
My puppy always seems hungry. Should I feed more?
Many puppies act hungry no matter how much they eat. Go by their body condition, not their begging. If you can feel their ribs easily and see a waist, the amount is probably right. Ask your vet if you're unsure.
Can I feed adult dog food to a puppy?
Use a food labelled as complete for growth (or 'all life stages'). Puppies need more energy and different mineral levels than adult dogs, and large-breed puppies in particular need a food formulated for large-breed growth.
