Plain wheat roti (chapati) isn't toxic to dogs, so a small piece now and then won't harm a healthy dog. But it adds very little to their diet, and roti from the family table often comes with ghee, butter, salt or fillings that aren't dog-friendly. Think of it as an occasional bite, never as a meal.
In many homes in Pakistan and India, sharing leftover roti with the dog is a long-standing habit. Here's how to do it safely.
Is roti good for dogs?
Roti is made from whole wheat flour (atta) and water. It's mostly carbohydrate, with some fibre and a little protein. Dogs can digest cooked wheat, and many commercial dog foods contain grains.
The problem is what roti doesn't provide. Dogs need a balance of animal protein, fats, vitamins and minerals โ especially calcium and phosphorus in the right ratio for growing puppies. A diet built on roti, or roti and milk, leaves dogs short of these nutrients and can lead to poor growth, a dull coat, weight gain and other health problems over time.
The risks
Ghee, butter and oil
Roti brushed with ghee or butter, and fried breads like paratha and puri, are high in fat. Fatty foods can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and can trigger pancreatitis, a painful and sometimes serious inflammation of the pancreas. Give only plain, dry roti.
Salt
Some households add salt to the dough. A small amount isn't dangerous, but dogs don't need extra salt, and salty foods add up โ especially for small dogs.
Onion, garlic and stuffed breads
This is the most important risk. Aloo, gobi, keema and mooli parathas, and many stuffed or flavoured breads, contain onion, garlic, chives, chilli or spice mixes. Onion and garlic โ fresh, cooked, fried or powdered โ can damage a dog's red blood cells and cause anaemia, sometimes days after eating. Garlic naan, curry, daal and sabzi carry the same risk, so never wipe roti through your plate before sharing it. See our full list of foods that are toxic to dogs.
Raw dough
Never let your dog eat raw atta dough, especially if it contains yeast (as naan and some breads do). Yeast dough can keep rising in the stomach, causing painful bloating, and produces alcohol as it ferments. Treat this as an emergency.
Wheat allergy
A small number of dogs are allergic to wheat or another ingredient. Signs of a food allergy usually include:
- itchy skin, especially paws, face, ears and bottom
- repeated ear infections
- red, inflamed skin or hair loss from scratching
- vomiting, diarrhoea or frequent loose stools
If you notice these, stop the roti and speak to your vet. Diagnosing a food allergy usually means a strict elimination diet under veterinary guidance.
How to offer roti safely
- Use plain roti cooked on a tawa with no ghee, butter, oil or salt.
- Let it cool.
- Tear it into small, bite-sized pieces, so your dog doesn't gulp a large piece and choke.
- Give it on its own โ not dipped in curry, daal, milk or tea.
How much roti can a dog eat?
Treats should stay under about 10% of your dog's daily calories. A medium plain roti contains around 70โ120 calories depending on size, which is a big treat for a small dog. As a rough guide:
| Dog size | Example breeds | Portion (occasional treat) |
|---|---|---|
| Toy (under 5 kg) | Chihuahua, Pomeranian | 1โ2 small pieces |
| Small (5โ10 kg) | Shih Tzu, Pug | A few small pieces |
| Medium (10โ25 kg) | Beagle, Indian Pariah Dog | Up to a quarter of a roti |
| Large (25โ40 kg) | Labrador, German Shepherd | Up to half a roti |
| Giant (over 40 kg) | Great Dane, Mastiff | Up to half a roti |
A couple of times a week is plenty. Dogs who are overweight or have diabetes should skip it unless your vet agrees.
Can puppies eat roti?
A tiny piece of plain roti won't harm a healthy puppy, but puppies have the greatest need for a complete puppy food. Filling them up with roti means they eat less of the food that builds strong bones and muscles. Keep it to the occasional small piece, and never use roti and milk as a puppy's main diet.
Frequently asked questions
Can I feed my dog roti every day?
It's better not to. Roti is mostly carbohydrate and doesn't give a dog the protein, fats, vitamins and minerals it needs. Regular helpings fill your dog up and can push out their complete food or lead to weight gain.
Can dogs eat paratha?
Plain paratha is high in ghee or oil, so it's best avoided. Stuffed parathas such as aloo, gobi or keema often contain onion, garlic, chilli and spices, which can make dogs ill โ onion and garlic can damage red blood cells.
Can dogs eat roti with daal or curry?
No. Most daal, sabzi and curry is cooked with onion, garlic, salt, oil and spices. Don't dip roti in your food before sharing it.
